Dist. 211 frittering away tax increase
To the editor: Let me be sure I have this right. Not long ago, the voters of District 211 were badgered and threatened with lowered educational standards for our kids, by the district and teachers, if we didn't vote to raise our taxes to pay for "the children."
The rate increase was for the good of the children, we were told.
It passed by a narrow margin even though the members of my household voted against it. We did so because we knew better as attested by the fact that since they got their additional funds, they have spent $2 million air conditioning a couple of gyms so that when graduation exercises are held in them during inclement weather (every four or five years) the parents and guests won't be uncomfortable for the hour and a half.
Now, they are spending more than $8 million to put new turf on the school athletic fields.
Maybe I'm just slow. But, I really can't see where this $10 million plus of our tax dollars meets the desperate and despicable (and successful) attempts to squeeze more money out of us. "For the children," my foot.
I think that many of us have finally realized that the district with their loaded bureaucracy, the teachers with their insatiable need for more money and Stroger and his gang on the county board with their incredible nepotism and enormous waste of taxpayers money, are much alike.
Especially when it comes to deceit and unnecessary spending. Now the question is, "How many of you are going to forget all this the next time they decide to threaten you?"
