Traditional Memorial Day events honor area's fallen

In Memorial Day patriotic parades and solemn ceremonies Monday, communities across the Northwest suburbs paid tribute to troops who have died in battle.

As wars continue in Iraq and Afghanistan, members of the military were uppermost in resident's minds.

Along suburban streets, people waved American flags as a bugler performed taps.

Boy Scouts marched alongside veterans of past wars.

Onlookers gave one local soldier a standing ovation.

At another ceremony, a moment of silence was observed to remember the fallen.

At Knopf Cemetery in Buffalo Grove, about 75 people attended a memorial service lead by Boy Scout Troop 401 where the Gettysburg Address was recited. American Legion Post 1247 and AMVETS Post 255, also joined in the tribute.

In Palatine, hundreds of onlookers waving American flags lined village streets as veterans and active military personnel joined Boy Scouts and civilians along the village's Memorial Day parade course.

The parade ended with a somber memorial service at the Hill side Cemetery.

Bartlett residents remembered fallen soldiers at a ceremony at Bartlett Cemetery, which featured a cannon blast provided by the Proctor's Corps of Artillery.

The streets of downtown Arlington Heights were streaked with American flags, red, white and blue balloons and streamers for the village's annual Memorial Day parade.

In suburb after suburb, similar scenes were repeated as residents remembered our war dead.
