Police pull woman from submerged car
Aurora police dove into a pond Friday evening to pull a 51-year-old woman from a submerged car.
She was inside the vehicle for at least five minutes after it sank and filled with water, Aurora police Sgt. Jeff Wiencek said.
Tammy Kennedy, 51, of the 1100 block of Dawes Street, Aurora, was driving on the dead-end Sullivan Road, when her car jumped the curb, drove through two fences, a tree and went airborne into a retention pond, Wiencek said.
The 5:18 p.m. accident happened behind the Sri Venkateshwara Temple at 1145 Sullivan Road.
He said officers were quickly on the scene.
One window on the car was broken out and had been replaced with plastic. Kennedy reportedly crawled half-way out of the window, then went back in the car and remained there as it sank, Wiencek said.
Three police officers and a diver went into the pond to pull Kennedy from the car, where she was transported to Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora initially in serious but stable condition, he said.
She later was transferred to another medical facility, although officials would not say which one.
Wiencek said alcohol is suspected of being a factor in the crash.
