Indy does well for opening, but nowhere near record

LOS ANGELES -- "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" whipped up $25 million on an opening day that promised a strong holiday weekend showing, a box office tracking firm said Friday.

The movie's domestic receipts were impressive for a Thursday opening but fell far short of the record $50 million collected by "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" in 2005, Media By Numbers President Paul Dergarabedian said.

Dergarabedian said "Star Wars" had a younger audience that was more enthusiastic about seeing the movie during its Thursday opening.

The older fans of "Indiana Jones" are more likely to come out after the movie has been in theaters a few days or even weeks, he said.

"The demographics of this film across the board definitely trend older because of the nostalgia factor," Dergarabedian said.

Paramount Pictures, which made the film, declined to confirm its opening day box office figure.

"Indiana Jones" opened early Thursday in 4,260 theaters, according to Media By Numbers.

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," the first film in 19 years about the archaeologist-adventurer played by Harrison Ford, debuted at the Cannes Film Festival this month to wan reviews.
