Mundelein fires make for busy day

Mundelein firefighters had a hot day Wednesday as two separate fires caused about $200,000 in damage.

The first fire was spotted by a maintenance man at 11:47 a.m. at an apartment complex at 2555 Hickory Ave.

Firefighters were on the scene within three minutes and had the flames under control 22 minutes later.

The damage was confined to the one apartment, but rendered the unit uninhabitable after an estimated $30,000 loss.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No one was home at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

Only two hours later, another fire broke out at a single-family home at 243 N. Midlothian Road.

The home is just a few blocks away from the fire station and was visible as the truck headed toward the scene.

Heavy smoke and flames consumed the entire back of the home, causing about $170,000 worth of damage.

The homeowner was home at the time of the fire but was not injured.

It took about 48 minutes to douse the blaze. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
