Briefs: Challenger to stay on ballot

The Republican challenging longtime state Sen. Terry Link in the upcoming election should stay on the ballot, an Illinois State Board of Elections hearing officer decided Wednesday. The officer rejected Democrat-driven complaints about Mettawa resident Keith Gray's candidacy, said Dan Venturi, leader of the Lake County Republican organization. The decision still must be ratified by the elections board. The objection was filed last month by a Link campaign worker. Link, of Waukegan, and Gray are set to face off for the 30th Senate District seat.

New principal for Fremont

Fremont Intermediate School will get a new principal starting July 1, officials announced Wednesday. Patricia Reynolds will take over the Mundelein-area school, the school board decided this week. Reynolds now is principal at West Elementary School in Zion. She will replace Denise Glasgow at the school, which serves third- through fifth-graders. Glasgow is taking a post as a part-time associate administrator in the district.

Alert system approved

The village of Round Lake Beach will deploy a mass notification service designed to alert residents, schools and businesses of urgent and emergency events between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. today. The service allows officials to record, send and track personalized voice messages to thousands of residents, businesses and local agencies in just minutes through a single phone call. Publicly available primary residential and business phone numbers in Round Lake Beach will automatically be included in the system. However, residents can opt-in to provide their complete information (up to three phone numbers and two e-mail addresses) and indicate if they have a TTY/TDD devise by visiting the Round Lake Beach web site, www.villageofroundlakebeach.com, and clicking on the link that says "COMMUNITY NOTIFICATION SYSTEM" to enter their information into the secure database.
