Gas bill contained a really big mistake

I wish to alert my fellow neighbors about a situation that has occurred with Nicor.

During the winter months of December, January and February, when gas usage was highest, we received only estimated bills and then on May 14, we received a bill for $1,303.21. Because of the previously estimated bills, most of our gas therm usage was charged during this last billing period when natural gas costs had gone up significantly.

I felt the billing was unfair, and when I called to complain the NICOR supervisor said it was an unintentional mistake and corrected the bill so it was now $278.31. She said if I had not called the previous bill would have stood.

What about all the people out there who are busy and do not know they should check their bills? What about those who have to make decisions between paying for heat, housing, food and medicine?

Is this the way Nicor gets its rate hike?
