Man found dead in Fox River likely intoxicated, coroner says

The man authorities found dead in the Fox River in Aurora on Saturday was likely intoxicated when he fell in and drowned, Kane County Coroner Chuck West said this morning.

A preliminary investigation shows there was no obvious trauma to the man, now identified as Terry J. McBrien, 53, a sometime resident at an Aurora homeless shelter, West said.

"It appears that he was standing down by the river and we believe probably was intoxicated and just fell in," West said. "He was not found in deep water."

McBrien's body was found in the river behind the Aurora Animal Control building, West said.

A conductor aboard a train traveling across a nearby bridge spotted the body in the river and contacted authorities, West said.

The Aurora Fire Department pulled the body out of the river at 9:27 a.m.

An autopsy scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m. will help determine the cause of death. Toxicology test results won't be known for another three weeks, West said.
