Hey Frank, your new bank sign is wrong

Frank Appleby already knows.

He knows every brick of his new Peoples' Bank is in the right place.

He also knows there is one tiny thing that is not.

The apostrophe in "Peoples' Bank" is grammatically incorrect. The name should be "People's Bank."

Appleby, the bank's president, says people bring up the misplaced apostrophe from time to time. After all, the bank's main branch at 10 S. Vail Ave. is spelled the same wrong way.

He says he made the error on purpose.

"The problem is that there are about a hundred People's Banks downstate," he says. "Eventually, we'd like to drop it (the apostrophe) altogether."

Appleby is a popular figure in downtown Arlington Heights and he's known for his sense of humor. Especially, hopefully, today.

Last year he introduced a "traveling bank" that is being passed around local Arlington Heights businesses to collect donations for non-profit agencies. In 2005, he gave away "I love Arlington Heights" T-shirts, caps and bags to customers.

Last year, Appleby bought the property on Arlington Heights Road, just south of Central Road, and demolished the Masonic Lodge to build the new bank.

Despite the construction, Appleby made room for the lodge's annual Vidalia Onion Sale that took place a couple weeks ago.

So, we'll give him this one wrong apostrophe.

New Polish eatery opens: Brama Bread Restaurant at 6 S. Dunton Ave. officially opened last week for lunch and breakfast.

Arlington Heights resident Agnes Zietek serves up everything from sandwiches and salads to pancakes and omelets. Besides a variety of coffee drinks and smoothies, Zietek sells breakfast items like waffles, crepes, and eggs which cost between $4 and $7 each. Lunch items include salad, soup, panini sandwiches and cold sandwiches, which cost about $6 or $7.

Brama also offers Polish and Hungarian cuisine in the from of pierogies, potato pancakes, meatballs and cabbage.

There's also a kids menu.

Free kids fest: There will be a free kids fair from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Pioneer Park, 500 S. Fernandez Ave.

The event will include refreshments, a puppet show, raffle, story hour and soccer demonstrations as well as interactive games and contests

Back to Dancing with the Stars: Monday's village board meeting won't be televised because there is a short agenda. The agenda can be found at www.vah.com, by clicking on "minutes and agendas" at the top of the home page.

The village saves about $2,500 each time it skips a taping.
