Football
Sampson recognized: Stevenson junior Ben Sampson has been nominated for the 2009 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, a prep football all-star game that will be played in San Antonio on Jan. 3, 2009.
With the nomination, the lineman is regarded as one of the top 400 high school football players in the nation. During the 2008 season, 90 of the 400 nominees will be selected to play in the game.
Venegoni to Augie: Carmel Catholic senior David Venegoni will attend Augustana College and be a member of coach Jim Barnes' highly successful Viking football program.
Venegoni, a 6-foot, 195-pound quarterback, has also earned varsity letters in basketball and baseball.
In football, as a senior, he helped lead the Corsairs to a 10-3 record and semifinal berth in the Class 7A playoffs, earning team MVP honors. He was named the East Suburban Catholic Conference's co-offensive player of the year.
Venegoni ran for 1,100 yards and 21 touchdowns, averaging 7.8 yards a carry, and threw for another 650 yards and 2 TDs.
The Gurnee resident is a National Honor Society member and a Mu Alpha Theta math honor society member, as well. He is planning on pre-law, economics and business majors at Augustana.
Venegoni will be joining an Augustana program that is one of the strongest football powers at the NCAA Division III level. Augustana has won 22 CCIW titles and is the only school in NCAA history, at any level, to claim four consecutive national championships (1983-86). The Vikings have not experienced a losing season in 29 years.
Barnes will begin his ninth season at the helm of his alma mater in 2008 and has posted an overall record of 60-23 (.723) with the Vikings and a CCIW mark of 43-13 (.768). His overall collegiate coaching record, which includes five years as the head coach at The College of Wooster, is 97-36 (.729).
Midday, Gallagher to UW-Platteville: Lake Zurich's Steven Midday and Pat Gallagher will play football at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville for Pioneer head coach Mike Emendorfer.
Both Midday, an offensive lineman, and Gallagher, a wide receiver, earned two varsity letters for the Bears, helping them winning the Class 7A state championship last fall and finished runner-up in the state in 2006.
Midday was selected as a four-year athletic scholar award. He plans to major in reclamation, environment and conservation.
Gallagher caught 27 passes for 560 yards and 3 touchdowns as a senior. He plans to major in criminal justice.
