Naperville woman wins TV for naming geese

It's all about textures and grains for the goslings that hatched outside a P.M. Bedroom Gallery.

When it came to selecting from among the thousands of names submitted for the seven Canada goose babies born last month outside the Naperville store, the company went with wood.

Lori Jackson from Naperville went witty and came up a winner with Mable Maple, Sherry Cherry, Wally Walnut, Huck Hickory, Bertha Birch, Allen Alder, and Annie Oak.

The owner of the Midwest furniture chain selected the winning set of names because of their "uniqueness" and "how they tied to our different wood species we offer for our furniture," regional sales manager Jeff Cleasby said in an announcement.

Two Canada geese took up residence among the landscaping outside the Naperville store in March, making it difficult for those who tried to enter the store or traverse certain parts of the parking lot. Fred, as the male was named by store employees, was diligent in his duties protecting his mate, Wilma, as she sat on her nest.

The store launched a contest to name the goslings expected from the seven visible eggs and offered as a prize a Mirropane television, which looks like a mirror when not being used as a flat panel TV.

While P.M. Bedroom Gallery officials promised to select a winner 10 days after the eggs hatched, the geese didn't stick around for the results.

Days after the April 29 arrival of the goslings, Wilma then led them to a nearby stream to continue their familial journeys.

Among the many suggested names were a lot of entries for the seven dwarfs. Some people got caught up in political fever and went with Clinton, Obama, McCain, and so on.

Then there were the cartoon-loving folks who continued along the Flintstones route by selecting Pebbles, Bam-Bam, Dino, Barney.

In the end, though, they just couldn't resist the allure of wood.
