Briefs: Nine mailboxes damaged

St. Charles police are investigating the vandalism of nine mailboxes last week on Meadow View Drive. Each of the mailboxes appeared to have been struck with a baseball bat, police said in a report made public Monday. Two residents reported hearing voices and vehicle noises followed by a loud "bang" around 10 p.m. May 6. The next morning, mailboxes were found to be damaged on the 500, 600, 4000, 4100 and 4200 blocks of the street. To report information to police, call (630) 377-4435.

A winning combination

Waubonsee Community College students Kelly Kindelin, Kelli Lippard, Steven Law and Topaz Williams will be honored by the Children's Hospital of Illinois and the Illinois Department of Transportation Division of Traffic Safety for their winning entry in the "Be a Buckle Buddy!" Public Service Announcement contest. The recognition ceremony is at 12:30 p.m. today in the Academic and Professional Center at the college's Sugar Grove campus, Route 47 at Waubonsee Drive. The communication students wrote, directed, filmed, edited and submitted the winning entry in the statewide contest. "Be a Buckle Buddy!" is a child passenger safety education program featuring a toll-free statewide hotline number anyone in Illinois may call to report an unrestrained or improperly restrained child. No tickets are issued as this is an educational program.

Toot in Geneva parade

Former high school band members are invited to join the Second Time Around Band to march in the Swedish Days Parade June 22. Bring your own instrument but rentals are available. Salvation Army celebrates

The Tri City Salvation Army will celebrate Salvation Army Week with a public reception from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. The event will take place at the local chapter's "emergency canteen," the Blue Goose Super Market, 200 S. Second St., St. Charles. Admission is free. Visitors will receive coffee, doughnuts and information about programs and military personnel will receive special gifts. The organization's brass band will perform. Call (630) 377-2769.

Rock concert

The rock group m28 will perform at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Fellowship Hall at the United Methodist Church of Geneva, 211 Hamilton St. The group is a two-time Rockford Area Music Industry Award winner.
