No prosecution for crash

An off-duty Chicago police officer involved in a crash that killed two people last Thanksgiving will not face criminal charges. John Ardelean was charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence after the Nov. 22 crash that killed 22-year-old Miguel Flores and 21-year-old Erick Lagunas. The charges were upgraded in January to two felony counts of aggravated DUI. However, a Cook County judge dismissed the case after some witnesses testified they did not think the officer was drunk. The family of the victims says authorities are ignoring indications Ardelean was speeding and that some witnesses said Ardelean was on the wrong side of the road. Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis says the Internal Affairs Division are investigating Ardelean and his supervisors. Ardelean has been relieved of police powers, though he is still being paid.
