Ex-con sent back to prison for holding brother's gun after shooting
A Rockford man Thursday was headed back to prison for a weapons offense linked to a fall shooting near Huff Elementary School in Elgin
Larrell Cannon, 25, pleaded guilty to unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and received a six-year sentence for his role in the Sept. 8, 2007, incident, according to Greg Sams, a Kane County prosecutor.
Police said Cannon and his brother, 21-year-old Denarrell Mabry, were at Illinois Avenue and Hastings Street about 11:45 a.m. when Mabry fired a .357 Magnum revolver at some men in a red truck.
The shots missed, and Mabry was chased by the occupants into Ray's Restaurant at 801 St. Charles St., where he was beaten and hit with a baseball bat, police said.
Mabry ran from his attackers and handed the gun to Cannon, who tried to get rid of the pistol before the brothers were arrested, Sams said.
No one was injured in the gunplay, which took place near Huff, where several people were present.
Although he did not take part in the shooting or fight, Cannon was charged with a Class X felony because his criminal record included convictions for robbery, drug and weapon offenses, Sams said.
With credit for time served in the Kane County jail, Cannon must serve roughly two years before he is eligible for parole.
Mabry, who was on parole at the time of the shooting on a drug charge, is jailed on $1 million bond awaiting a trial for aggravated discharge of a firearm and other offenses.
Mabry is due in court again Thursday.
