Floyd only cares about wins
One day later, White Sox starting pitcher Gavin Floyd still wasn't overly impressed about just missing his second no-hit bid in 6 starts this season.
Floyd had a no-hitter against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night until Joe Mauer doubled with one out in the ninth inning.
Against the Detroit Tigers on April 12, Floyd had a no-hitter until Edgar Renteria singled with one out in the eighth.
"It's a nice little selfish goal, but I worry about winning,'' said Floyd, who ranks fifth in the American League with a 2.50 ERA. "That's all. I just love winning. If I get a no-hitter, great. If not, I try to stay in the game as long as possible and try to keep the team in the game.''
Floyd has been doing that all season, and the 25-year-old was happy to hear teammate Paul Konerko's prediction he has the talent to become a No. 1 or 2 starter.
"Ideally, I think that's what you want to be,'' said Floyd, who is throwing one of the better curveballs in the American League.
"My confidence has definitely improved a lot. Just feeling comfortable out there makes you feel confident. God gave me great ability and I'm just happy to be in control of it and just throw strikes and hopefully win out there.''
Gardenhire expected back: Manager Ron Gardenhire was expected to rejoin the Twins during Wednesday night's game against the Sox.
Gardenhire has been away from the team since Friday, when he returned to his hometown of Okmulgee, Okla., after his oldest brother, Mike, died suddenly.
"I talked to his coaches (Tuesday) night,'' Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "(Gardenhire) is one of the guys I admire the most in this game. He's one of the guys I respect most in this game. I love the way he manages. I love the way he treats people.''
Think pink: Nick Swisher, John Danks, Bobby Jenks and Toby Hall all were sporting pink facial hair Wednesday in honor of Mother's Day and to promote breast cancer awareness.
"We can have fun doing this and raise awareness to it,'' Danks said. "At the same time, I can show my mom how much I appreciate her and love her.''
