Greed not cause of Eight Belles' death

With the devastating death of Eight Belles in the Kentucky Derby, there is undoubtedly much in question.

The alarm since the incident has been justified. However, there are a few misconceptions to be cleared up about the horse industry.

Having owned and ridden horses at a highly competitive level my entire life, I've seen the good and the bad. It's insensitive to fire criticism toward the trainer, owner and jockey of that remarkable filly.

Riding takes teamwork, and you won't have a winning horse without a bond between horse and rider. Some of the most well-bred and talented horses simply cannot compete for that reason.

World-class horses including Eight Belles compete with an edge from their inner drive and spirit and also because of the level of happiness in their surroundings.

People have been accusing the industry of greed and selfishness.

They have claimed horses are used to make money, when, in fact, horse sports are notorious for draining money.

There are many industries that offer more financial stability and opportunity of success than horse sports.

Horse owners get into the industry for the love of the horse and its beauty; money is far from guaranteed.

We can take a second look at racing standards, but those directly involved with the horses have the best intentions.

Even if there are no answers to what happened, Eight Belles has not died in vain. She is a tribute and celebration of the equine spirit.

Eight Belles was a sight to behold. I know many share in my feelings that the heartbreak from her loss will never fade.

How lucky are we, to have witnessed one of the most brave, beautiful, athletic animals with so much heart we'll ever have the privilege of seeing in a lifetime.
