Pie doesn't highlight his catch

CINCINNATI -- Apparently Felix Pie didn't watch ESPN on Tuesday.

Otherwise he'd have seen his catch that robbed Ken Griffey Jr. of a home run Monday night played over and over.

Pie leaped at the center-field wall and pulled back what would have been the 598th home run of Griffey's career.

"I was excited because I love watching Ken Griffey play," Pie said Tuesday. "I have, in my room, a big picture of Ken Griffey. I love watching him play."

Pie attributed the catch to his work in spring training with outfield coach Mike Quade. Pie said it was the first time he has leaped and reached over the wall to take a home run away. But he said he hadn't watched replays.

"Theriot told me today, "No. 1,' " Pie said, referring to teammate Ryan Theriot. "No. 1 what? The catch last night. I said, 'Oh.' "

Pie also said he's starting to feel better at the plate after extensive work with manager Lou Piniella, hitting coach Gerald Perry and minor-league hitting coordinator Dave Keller.

Cedeno plays: Ronny Cedeno played second base in place of Mike Fontenot on Tuesday night. Lou Piniella was asked if Cedeno would get more playing time.

"Let's see," Piniella said. "He's going to tell me how much he wants to play."

DeRosa rests: Mark DeRosa played in 31 of the Cubs' first 32 games, but he did not start Tuesday. Lou Piniella said he wasn't sure when DeRosa would return.

"Well, we've moved him around all over," Piniella said. "He's been scuffling a little bit with the bat, so we'll give him a little bit of a breather and get him back in. I'm not sure about tomorrow. We'll see."

Notables: Lefty Rich Hill worked 5 innings for Class AAA Iowa on Tuesday, giving up 7 hits and 2 runs. He walked one and struck out five.

Reliever Scott Eyre followed Hill and gave up 2 hits and 1 run in 1 inning, striking out two. Eyre (elbow rehab) likely will rejoin the Cubs this weekend.

A look ahead: The Cubs finish with the Reds this afternoon and then take Thursday off. The Arizona Diamondbacks, who beat the Cubs in last year's division series, come to Wrigley Field for three, beginning Friday.

The Diamondbacks will throw Dan Haren, rookie Max Scherzer and veteran lefty Randy Johnson at the Cubs. The Cubs will counter with Ted Lilly, Ryan Dempster and Carlos Zambrano.
