More trains would be bad for Wayne

I would like to expand upon my concerns expressed in a recent article, "Rail Wrangle," about the proposed EJ&E railroad sale to Canadian National.

In Wayne, with only four trains per day, we already have blocked intersections. The proposed 8,000-10,000 feet trains can shut down all east-west roads through Wayne -- simultaneously.

Our elementary school's 23 buses must cross freight tracks twice a day. A 555 percent increase in freight traffic can lead to disastrous delays for personal emergency situations, as well as ambulance, police and fire response time.

The 1,200 percent increase in daily volume of hazardous waste through residential areas, coupled with a greater likelihood of derailment, spills and fires, could be calamitous. The DuPage Forest Preserve can speak of the heavy environmental impact on Pratt-Wayne Woods.

Already, trains are shaking houses near the tracks. Noise, fumes and backed-up traffic will degrade our lives. The folks in this "sleepy" village may not have realized the immensity of the threat to our lives by Canadian National before. Now we are waking up.
