Woman pleads not guilty in death of daughter
A Waukegan woman accused of fatally stabbing her 6-year-old daughter, whom she claimed was demonically possessed, has pleaded not guilty to murder charges.
Twenty-five-year-old Nelly Vazquez-Salazar entered the plea Wednesday before a Lake County judge.
Prosecutors say Vazquez-Salazar first told police she killed her daughter, Evelyn, in self-defense after an attack. She later said she awoke April 7th to find Evelyn sitting on her bed with a butcher knife.
Vazquez-Salazar told police Evelyn had been sleepwalking earlier, and she believed the child was possessed.
Vazquez-Salazar is being held in lieu of $5 million bail. If convicted, she could face life in prison.
