Gurnee mother and son plead guilty to drug charges

A Gurnee woman and her son pleaded guilty to drug charges Monday in Lake County Circuit Court.

Karen Giarelli, 46, and Ryan Giarelli, 19, are eligible to have their convictions erased if they complete two years of probation without further legal trouble.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Fred Day said the pair was arrested Feb. 13 when agents of the Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group served a search warrant on their house at 142 Belle Plaine Ave.

Police found seven one-ounce bags of marijuana that Ryan Giarelli said belonged to him, and 4.5 grams of psilocybin mushrooms Karen Giarelli claimed.

Circuit Judge James Booras accepted guilty pleas of possession of marijuana from Ryan Giarelli, and possession of a controlled substance from Karen Giarelli.

He fined Ryan Giarelli $1,550 and ordered him to perform 75 hours of community service. Karen Giarelli was fined $530.

He placed both on probationary terms that will be cleared if there are no additional arrests or violations of probation conditions.
