Driver in death gets court dates

The motorist accused of striking and killing a Round Lake Beach teen was assigned a court date schedule Monday in Lake County Circuit Court.

Desiree Britt, 22, is charged with driving with marijuana in her system Jan. 24, when police say she hit Alonzo De La Torre.

De La Torre, 17, was killed as he jogged with friends along Hainesville Road near Merriwood Lane.

In addition to the driving charge, Britt, of 22 Junior Drive, Grayslake, is charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, endangering the life of a child and driving without insurance.

Police say Britt's 2-year-old daughter was in her car at the time De La Torre was struck.

Associate Judge Joseph Waldeck scheduled a trial date of June 30, and ordered Britt to appear in court June 19.

At the time of the accident, she was on probation for battery and subject to a 120-day jail sentence if she violated any probation regulations.

On April 23, Circuit Judge John Phillips ordered her to begin serving that term after Phillips was told Britt had twice tested positive for marijuana use.

Both tests came after De La Torre's death, the first being Feb. 27 and the second on the same day Phillips entered his order.

All charges against Britt are misdemeanors carrying a maximum penalty of one year in jail, except for the possession of marijuana, which has a maximum of 90 days.
