Description issued in Buffalo Grove assault, kidnapping case

Buffalo Grove police today are still searching for a man posing as an officer who tried to sexually assault and kidnap a woman on Saturday.

Todd Kupsak, spokesman for police, said today that police will continue interviews with the woman and a friend who was with her at the time.

Police said the man is about 5 feet 10 inches tall, 180 to 190 pounds, in his mid- to late-20s and has short, brown spiked hair.

Kupsak said a sketch probably won't be released because there aren't enough identifying factors to do so.

Around 5 a.m. on Saturday, a man in a silver, four-door Audi flashed his headlights at the woman's car as she and her friend were driving home.

She pulled over on Thompson Boulevard near Arlington Heights Road, and he told her that he was an undercover police officer who was going to arrest her for improper lane usage.

Kupsak said the man took her wallet and identification at the time.

He told her friend to walk away, which he did, and he placed the woman in the back seat of his car.

After a few moments, he pulled over again, took off the handcuffs and put the woman in the front seat of the car.

"At that time, he gave all the personal belongings back to her," Kupsak said.

The woman became suspicious at that point and ran from the car. The man tackled her and tried to assault her, but he ran off after she started screaming.

Kupsak said the woman didn't know the man, and police don't believe that he has an indication of her address, even though he took her identification for a short period of time.

Police are warning that anybody in a similar situation should pull over in a well-lit public area or drive to the nearest police station.

Drivers should keep their doors locked and windows up and if they have reason to believe that someone pulling them over is not a real police officer, call 911 immediately.

Kupsak said the man later pulled over again, took off the handcuffs and put the woman in the front seat. The woman became suspicious at that point.

"That's when she decided to escape," he said.

The man tackled her as she ran off and tried to sexually assault the woman, but she began screaming.

The man drove off in his car and the woman ran to a nearby gas station to call police.

Kupsak said the woman wasn't physically injured in the attack.

He said the police normally wouldn't be releasing information so early in an investigation, but the department is concerned that someone is posing as a police officer.

"We wanted to get that out," he said. "We're still getting a lot of information from the victim."

Buffalo Grove police said that it is not common practice for the department to use unmarked vehicles to conduct traffic stops.

Police said the man is about 5 feet, 10 inches tall, 180 to 190 pounds, in his mid- to late-20s and has short, brown spiked hair.
