Briefs: Fundraiser for local family
Dundee Highlands Elementary School will hold a fundraiser Saturday for the Erpito family. Jerry Erpito, the father of two Dundee Highlands students, died of cancer in March. The school, 407 S. Fifth St., West Dundee, will hold a garage sale and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the gym. The school is accepting gently used or new donations of household items, books, toys, appliances, furniture and clothing all this week from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donations will also be accepted from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Library groundbreaking set
Gail Borden Public Library officials plan a groundbreaking ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday for their $4.2 million branch library at Reserve Drive and Bowes Road on Elgin's west side. Voters in 2000 gave the library permission to erect the 10,000-square-foot facility, which is designed for expansion to 30,000 square feet. Call (847) 429-5981 or visit www.gailborden.info/

U-46 volunteers of the year
Elgin Area School District U-46 has recognized two 2008 volunteers of the year. Pat Kressin started volunteering in the district in the early 1990s. She currently serves on the Partnership for Excellence in Learning, the district's realty advisory committee, and worked on U-46's strategic plan. A founding member of Spanish literacy program Plaza Comunitaria, Luis Fernando de Leon has also served on the bilingual parent advisory council for the past three years. Kressin and de Leon were honored by the U-46 board at a May 1 reception.
