Pence hits one over the fence for Astros' winner in 12
Hunter Pence hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 12th to lead the host Houston Astros to an 8-6 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.
Pence's home run to left field scored Lance Berkman and completed Houston's comeback for its third straight win. The Astros trailed by as many as 4 runs.
Mitch Stetter (1-1) gave up Pence's homer, his fourth of the season.
Berkman had 4 RBI and tied his career high with 4 hits, including a homer and a pair of doubles.
With two outs in the 12th, Houston's Tim Byrdak (1-0) loaded the bases with walks, but left fielder Darin Erstad caught J.J. Hardy's pop fly for the final out.
Houston trailed by 2 entering the ninth and got singles from Erstad and Geoff Blum off closer Eric Gagne before Michael Bourn walked. Erstad scored on a groundout by Kaz Matsui to make it 6-5.
Miguel Tejada walked to load the bases before Gagne walked Berkman to tie it at 6-6. Carlos Lee grounded out to send it to the 10th.
Jose Valverde pitched a perfect 10th for Houston and Salomon Torres did the same for Milwaukee. Both allowed a single in the 11th, but neither gave up a run to send it to the 12th.
Marlins 10, Padres 3: San Diego's Greg Maddux failed in his fourth bid to reach 350 victories, when he was outpitched by young Andrew Miller in a loss to host Florida.
Maddux (2-3) twice failed to hold a lead, and he allowed 11 hits and 5 runs, 4 earned, in 5¿ innings.
Miller (2-2) earned his seventh career win with his best performance since joining the Marlins in the off-season trade that sent Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera to Detroit. The left-hander allowed 4 hits and 2 runs in a season-high 6 innings.
Dan Uggla hit his seventh homer, doubled twice, drove in 3 runs and scored 3 times for the Marlins, who took two of three games in the series. Mike Jacobs also had 3 of Florida's 16 hits and drove in a run, and Matt Treanor had 2 hits and 2 RBI.
Nationals 5, Pirates 2: Tim Redding allowed 1 run over 6½ innings, Aaron Boone homered and host Washington beat Pittsburgh.
Redding (4-2) closed out an 11-game homestand, Washington's longest of the season, by helping the Nationals to their sixth victory in seven games. Washington finished the homestand 8-3.
Phillies 6, Giants 5: Pat Burrell had 2 doubles and 2 RBI to lead host Philadelphia past San Francisco for manager Charlie Manuel's 500th career victory.
Shane Victorino had 2 hits and Carlos Ruiz homered for the Phillies. Philadelphia won in the bottom of the ninth when second baseman Eugenio Velez couldn't handle Geoff Jenkins' sharp grounder, allowing Ryan Howard to score from second.
Brad Lidge (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.
Braves 14, Reds 7: Chipper Jones drove in 5 runs, and host Atlanta scored 7 runs in the second inning and beat Cincinnati to complete a three-game sweep.
Jones hit his ninth homer -- a 3-run shot off Bronson Arroyo in the 7-run second. Kelly Johnson was 4-for-6 and Mark Kotsay was 3-for-4 with a homer.
Rockies 7, Dodgers 2: Aaron Cook gave host Colorado the strong outing it needed, Matt Holliday had 2 hits and 2 RBI, and the Rockies beat the Dodgers to end a four-game losing streak.
Andre Ethier homered for the Dodgers, who had their eight-game winning streak snapped. Derek Lowe (2-2) took the loss.
Mets 5, Diamondbacks 2: First baseman Conor Jackson's ninth-inning throwing error allowed Carlos Beltran to score the go-ahead run from second and New York went on to beat host Arizona.
The Mets won at Arizona for the 15th time in 17 tries and handed the Diamondbacks just their second series loss of the season. The only other series Arizona lost was its season-opening three-game set at Cincinnati.
American League
Twins 7, Tigers 6: Joe Mauer capped a Minnesota rally from a 6-run, first-inning deficit, slapping a 2-run single up the middle in the seventh to lift the host Twins past the Tigers.
A two-out error in the inning by third baseman Carlos Guillen, who let a routine groundball hit by Nick Punto roll off his glove and through his legs, set up a 4-run surge and ruined a strong start by Kenny Rogers.
Zach Miner (1-2) relieved and gave up an RBI single to Carlos Gomez and an RBI double to Brendan Harris. Then Bobby Seay came in and served up Mauer's go-ahead hit.
Matt Guerrier (2-1) earned the victory with 2 scoreless innings in relief. Joe Nathan picked up the save, his 11th in as many attempts, with a scoreless ninth to give the Twins a sweep of this homestand of five intradivision games.
Royals 2, Indians 0: Gil Meche pitched 7 shutout innings, a throwing error by third baseman Casey Blake broke a scoreless tie and Kansas City beat host Cleveland.
Miguel Olivo added a solo homer in the ninth for the Royals, who outscored the Indi 6-2 in sweeping the two-game series. Friday night's game was rained out.
Yankees 8, Mariners 2: Derek Jeter had 4 hits, and host New York got consecutive homers from Melky Cabrera and Robinson Cano during a 6-run outburst, beating the slumping Seattle Mariners 8-2 Sunday to finish a lopsided three-game sweep.
Just called up from the minors, Darrell Rasner pitched 6 comfortable innings and the sweet-swinging Yankees roughed up an ineffective Carlos Silva (3-1). New York outscored the Mariners 19-4 in the series, immediately after getting swept three games at home by the Detroit Tigers.
The Yankees responded following Friday's comments from co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner, who said he was "disappointed" with the season so far.
Red Sox 7, Rays 3: Kevin Youkilis had 4 RBI, and Jon Lester pitched 6 innings to lift host Boston over Tampa Bay, spoiling the return of Rays ace Scott Kazmir.
After being swept for the first time in franchise history by Tampa Bay last weekend, the Red Sox returned the favor and outscored the Rays in the series 26-10. None of the Tampa Bay starters in the three-game series made it out of the fourth inning.
Angels 6, Orioles 5: Gary Matthews Jr. and Torii Hunter homered in the first inning, and host Los Angeles beat Baltimore despite a poor outing by still-unbeaten Joe Saunders.
Saunders (6-0) threw 85 pitches over 5 innings in the shortest of his 7 starts. The left-hander allowed 4 runs and a career-high 12 hits, struck out one and walked none.
Athletics 3, Rangers 1: Jack Cust's 2-run homer in the seventh inning helped host Oakland end Texas' four-game winning streak.
Santiago Casilla (1-0) threw a scoreless seventh for the win. He has yet to allow a run in his 16½ innings.
