Comic, teacher to speak at church

Purdue University therapist and teacher and former stand-up comedian Will Miller will speak on how moms can make a difference Saturday and Sunday at a St. Charles church.

Miller is a sociology instructor with 16 years of experience as a stand-up comedian in New York. According to his Web site, Miller has appeared on national television and is a psychotherapist for a nationally syndicated radio show.

"His talk will be based on his book, 'Refrigerator Rights,' " said Larry Stratton, director of community impact for Christ Community Church, where Miller will speak. "It's a look at our culture and how frequent moves create a disconnectedness within our society."

"Miller believes that our need for other people is not being met," Stratton said. "His book asks the question: 'How many people can open your refrigerator and start making a sandwich?' Probably not many. Our message is that there are people at our church who care. It's the perfect place to seek help."

Miller will speak at 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday.

Stratton said the church, at Bolcum and Randall roads, felt Mother's Day weekend was a good time to examine the role of women, and Miller's free talk will focus on how mothers can help.

Miller lectures in the schools of organizational leadership, management and mass communications at Purdue University. Most of his speaking is done before corporate groups.

For information, call the church at (630) 485-3300. Christ Community Church also has campuses in DeKalb and Blackberry Creek.
