Royals bust out in 7th, drop Sabathia to 1-5
Billy Butler's single broke a tie game and keyed Kansas City's 4-run seventh inning, leading the Royals to a 4-2 win over the Cleveland Indians and C.C. Sabathia on Saturday night.
Sabathia (1-5) took a shutout into the seventh before the Royals strung together 6 hits against the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner and three relievers.
"We were due," Butler said. "I don't know if he was tired or what, but we put together some good at-bats in the seventh. Four runs in an inning is big for us, especially with our offense."
Luke Hochevar (2-1) held the Indians to 2 runs and 3 hits in 6 innings. Joakim Soria, the Royals' fourth pitcher, pitched the ninth for the save. The right-hander has converted all 7 of his save chances and hasn't allowed a run in 12 innings.
Sabathia had allowed 1 earned run in his last 20 innings through the sixth, but retired only one of the five hitters he faced in the seventh as the Royals sent nine men to the plate.
Red Sox 12, Rays 4: Manny Ramirez singled in a pair of runs in the first inning to end his longest RBI drought with Boston and Josh Beckett (4-2) picked up the victory over visiting Tampa Bay.
Ramirez also threw out a runner at the plate. Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz each had 3 hits and Jason Varitek drove in 3 runs for Boston, which has won four of five after a five-game losing streak.
Angels 3, Orioles 1: Jon Garland pitched 3-hit ball for eight innings and Gary Matthews Jr. drove in 2 runs as host Los Angeles beat Baltimore. Only four Orioles reached base against Garland (4-3), who allowed 1 run and retired 18 of his last 19 batters.
Twins 4, Tigers 1: Craig Monroe hit a 2-run homer off Justin Verlander and Brian Bass got his first major-league win in relief of injured starter Scott Baker to lead Minnesota past visiting Detroit.
Rangers 6, Athletics 3: A.J. Murray made the most of his chance in the starting rotation, allowing 2 earned runs a day after being called up from the minors to help visiting Texas get by Oakland.
David Murphy hit a 3-run homer and Chris Shelton added a solo shot for the Rangers, who have won four straight.
Yankees 6, Mariners 1: Johnny Damon homered and doubled twice to help Mike Mussina (4-3) win his third straight start in New York's victory over visiting Seattle.
