Kane County Jail locked down following threat
Kane County jail inmates were confined to their cells and security was increased Thursday while sheriff's deputies investigated a threat against the Geneva facility, authorities said.
The threat was made late Wednesday and a lockdown was initiated Thursday morning, said sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler, who declined to disclose details of the threat, citing the investigation.
Threats against the facility are uncommon and typically spark a temporary boost in security, Gengler said.
"We have inmates who are in there on pretty heavy things … they're not on vacation," he said.
No arrests have been made in connection with the threat. The lockdown is not expected to stay in effect more than a day, Gengler said.
Inmates at the jail were in their cells for the night when the threat was received. Jail staff let them out briefly this morning before initiating the lockdown, Gengler said.
