Fox Chain's Baker to host tournament

I've often said over the last 20 years that I don't talk or write about a product or service unless I've used it and did well with it.

Write this telephone number down: (847) 337-5559. It belongs to Fox Chain guide Darrell Baker.

Would you believe 483 walleyes have been caught this spring from the Fox Chain by Baker and his guide parties?

This kind of phenomenal action has gone on for years in Baker's boat, from spring through the ice season, but Darrell is only counting the "soft-water" action now.

And in light of those outstanding results, Baker again is conducting his multi-species tournament and seminar starting Sunday evening.

For a $70 entry fee per angler, fishermen will be treated to a Chain seminar at the Thirsty Turtle on Channel Lake. On Monday morning, anglers take off to catch as many different species of fish as possible. Trophies and prizes will be awarded at day's end.

Call (847) 337-5559 for the seminar and tournament or a day on the water with Baker.

Fishing update: The regular fishing season in Wisconsin opens this weekend. Not all lakes in the northern part of the state are free from ice.

Fox Chain: Despite the cold weather, anglers have scored well on walleye and crappie, especially in current areas on the north end of the Chain.

Cooling lakes: Striped bass action is slightly improved on LaSalle, while the stripers on Heidecke Lake have yet to make a major appearance.

Fox River: Shore anglers are finding some smallmouth holding tight to dead trees and outflow pipes.

Lake Michigan: Some charter skippers are working hard in this goofy weather, catching browns and coho salmon out of Waukegan and Winthrop harbors. There is some jumbo perch action going on near Lake Forest.

Calendar note: The T. Stanton Armour Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society will hold its 29th annual Sportsmen's Banquet on May 29 at the Sheraton Chicago Northwest Hotel in Arlington Heights.
