Hersey high school recognizes two alumni for honors

John Hersey High School in Northwest Suburban High School District 214 recently recognized two distinguished alumni.

One of those honored was the late Trevor Lehmann, from the class of 1987.

Lehmann was the youngest person elected as trustee for the village of Wheeling; he was diagnosed with ALS in 2004 and died of the disease in January of 2005.

After he was diagnosed, he spent much of his time raising awareness and research money for ALS.

The school also recognized Jimmy Sommers, a jazz artist who graduated in 1987.

A glimpse of the police: The Buffalo Grove Police Department seeks young people who want to be part of this summer's Junior Police Academy.

The group will stop a vehicle for a traffic violation, gather evidence at a crime scene and operate a K-9 unit.

The free academy is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon June 16 to 20. It's open to residents ages 12 to 15 who live or attend school in town.

Applications are available at the police department, 46 Raupp Blvd., or send an e-mail to police@vbg.org.

For more information, call (847) 459-2560. Applications are due by June 2.

Construction detour: The regular entrance to the Wheeling village hall is temporarily blocked off while the new facility is being built.

All traffic is diverted a little further down the street on Dundee Road, right next to the fire station. Just follow the detour signs to find parking.

No longer necessary: Vehicle stickers can be removed in Buffalo Grove this week.

Wednesday marked the last day the village required stickers to be displayed.

However, the village is quick to remind that animal tags for $10 each still need to be purchased for all pets in town.

For more information, call village hall at (847) 459-2500.

The big race: Wheeling Township Elementary District 21 will hold a 1-mile championship that will pit fifth graders from all its elementary schools against each other.

The girls race will be at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at Heritage Park. The boys' race will be at 4:45 p.m. Each school may to invite 15 boys and 15 girls to the race.
