5 from Northwest suburbs win Merit Scholarships

Five high school seniors from the Northwest suburbs have been awarded $2,500 scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corp. Winners are judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

This is the second of four groups of winners in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship program. Corporate scholarship winners were announced April 16; more announcements are coming on May 28 and July 14.

Winners of $2,500 each are:

• Tiffany L. Hwang, of Hanover Park, a senior at Hoffman Estates High School, whose probable career field is civil engineering.

• Stephen J. Park, of Inverness; a senior at Shattuck-St. Mary's School in Faribault, Minn., whose probable career field is medicine.

• John G. Pollock, of Buffalo Grove; a senior at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, whose probable career field is aeronautical engineering.

• Caroline N. Schafer, of Buffalo Grove; a senior at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, whose probable career field is international business.

• Patrick S. Walsh, of Arlington Heights; a senior at Northridge Preparatory School in Niles, whose probable career field will be medicine.
