Briefs: Puppy theft arraignment

Two former Petco employees pleaded innocent Tuesday to a misdemeanor alleging they helped steal a Pomeranian puppy last month from the Naperville store. Anais M. Marquez, 19, 24403 Kennedy Court, and Karlie A. Pellock, 19, 13345 Mary Lee Court, both of Plainfield, are facing retail theft charges. A third defendant, Emanuel Lopez, 19, of 13539 Rickefeller, Plainfield, pleaded innocent Monday to a similar felony. The pooch, returned days later, was not harmed. Police said Marquez and Pellock conspired with Lopez, an acquaintance, to steal the puppy and then sell it to them for $60.

Edward CEO receives honor

Edward Hospital President and CEO Pam Davis has been named 2008 Woman of the Year by the Naperville branch of the American Association of University Women. In the 20 years since her arrival in 1988, Davis has transformed Edward from a relatively small community hospital into a regional medical center, the group said in a press release. Edward's growth has included the opening of Edward Heart Hospital, Edward Cancer Center and the Edward Plainfield Outpatient Center. Previous honorees include Leeanne McGrath, founder of the Sharing Connection in Downers Grove; Margaret Price, former mayor of Naperville; and Osie Davenport, former president of the Naperville Unit District 203 school board.

Man charged in GPS thefts

A 32-year-old Aurora man already in jail on charges of stealing GPS units out of cars was charged Tuesday with seven more counts of burglary to motor vehicles for a string of GPS thefts that happened in St. Charles from March 23 to April 10, according to police. Alejandro Gudino, of 949 Liberty St., is accused of breaking front windows and removing dash-mounted GPS units on cars parked on the 3100 block of Blackhawk, 2000 block of Lincoln Highway, 4000 block of East Main Street, 700 block of South Randall Road, 3700 block of Ohio Avenue, 100 block of South Tyler Road and 2000 block of Bricher. Gudino was arrested April 17 in Aurora in connection with burglary cases in Aurora, Batavia and Geneva.

Coffee with the cops

Glen Ellyn police will sponsor Coffee with the Cops at 8 a.m. Saturday on the second floor of the Glen Ellyn Civic Center, 535 Duane St. Police say the intent is for residents to come to an informal setting to get answers about police-related issues. Chief Phil Norton, Deputy Chief Bill Holmer and others will be available for about two hours to answer questions or discuss topics. Carillon to open for tours

Naperville's Millennium Carillon will reopen for tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday beginning this week and continuing through Oct. 26 at 443 Aurora Ave. Friday tours will be added beginning May 23 and will run through Aug. 29. Admission is $3. There is no charge for the Visitor Center adjacent to Moser Tower. The Millennium Carillon Summer Concert Series also will return this year, starting at 7 p.m. June 10. In addition, weekly carillon performances will continue through the summer, with recitals at 7 p.m. Saturdays and 4 p.m. Sundays. For details, visit www.napervilleparks.org.

NCTV17 wins award

A documentary about the Stenger Brewery in Naperville, "Two Brothers, One Beer and the American Dream," won Naperville Community Television the Illinois State Historical Society's Superior Multi-Media Award. NCTV17 Executive Director Liz Spencer recently traveled to Springfield to receive the honor at the 2008 Annual Awards Luncheon. The family brewery was one of Naperville's larger employers in the mid-1800s.
