And the winner is ... Barrington High School

Video production students at Barrington High School can now say they have something in common with those who work on shows like "The Sopranos," "30 Rock" and "Lost."

They all have Emmy Awards.

The Barrington students, along with teens from throughout the Chicago area, were presented with the awards during Friday's Chicagoland Television Educators Council's 15th annual High School Video Festival.

During the festival, seven regional student Emmy Awards were presented, three of which went to Barrington students. Four other Barrington projects earned honorable mentions.

Barrington's video production teacher, Jeff Doles, said this is most students from one school honored at the same time.

"It is an incredible accomplishment," Doles said.

All the projects were done through the school's video club, 238 Studios, its television channel, BHS-TV, and for the school-sponsored Great Minds Video Project.

George Streicher, who graduated last year, and current senior Mark Minner won a student Emmy in the writing category for their project "Behind the Scenes," which gave viewers an inside look at BHS-TV.

The project is one of only two in the entire region to win a National Student Emmy. The video is posted on YouTube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-UeT7UIbDY.

"It is incredible to think that out of 50 states, and Puerto Rico, you are one of the best," Minner said.

Other area schools taking home student Emmys were Deerfield High, the Chicago Vocational Career Academy and Wheeling High. Wheeling's Stephen Rossi and Karl Anderson won the craft achievement category for "Stephen Rossi: Examples of Creative Production."

Other regional winners from Barrington were Streicher and senior Nicholas Gerger in the community and public service category for their project called "Bryan's Way," which profiled Iraq war veteran Bryan Anderson.

Minner, Brad Kopp and Dillon Schneider won in the sports category for their athletic year in review video.

Kopp, a senior, said he spent the entire school year filming each of the school's athletic teams to make sure they were all included.

"It is always great to be recognized," Kopp said. "It means a lot."

Barrington students earning honorable mentions were Streicher, Gerger, Schneider, Kopp, Minner and Melissa Darch.

Rebekah Cowing, of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences-Chicago/Midwest Chapter, said the national winners will be honored during an awards dinner in Chicago on May 9.

Doles said it has been great to see the school's video production program grow so quickly in the past few years.

"It has been a perfect storm of talent, resources and ambition," he said. "Success breeds success."
