Steadfast friend, loyal member of organizations

Jean Beatty Angrist of Glen Ellyn was known as a sincere lady who loved to entertain.

"She was a very warm person," Joe Wark of Glen Ellyn said. "Always wanting to help in some way."

Mrs. Angrist, 89, was born in Galesburg, Ill., and graduated from Knox College in Galesburg. She then moved to Chicago and worked for Harris Trust Bank.

She married Arthur Angrist, and in 1973 the two moved to Glen Ellyn. Arthur Angrist served as Glen Ellyn's village president from 1989 to 1993, actively participated in DuPage County affairs and served on different boards in many capacities. Mr. Angrist died at 83 in May 2003.

"She was like the perfect complement for Art and his career," said Wark, who served as Glen Ellyn's president from 1997 to 2001.

Mrs. Angrist was involved in many organizations, including the Community Nursing Service Auxiliary, the Glen Ellyn Infant Welfare Society, the Newcomers Club and the Woman's Club of Glen Ellyn.

Mrs. Angrist especially enjoyed spending summers at a cottage in Holland, Mich., where she loved to read, knit and socialize.

"I think Jean is sort of a steadfast friend," said Wini Dyer, a close friend of many years. "She was just always there for you as a friend."

Dyer met Mrs. Angrist about 40 years ago when the two lived in New Jersey.

"She was so much of a stronger person than her frail build would indicate," Dyer said.

Mrs. Angrist died in February at her home in Glen Ellyn after battling a long illness.

"Her family will miss her good humor and her love," said her daughter, Kristen Balderston. "And we'll miss spending part of our summers with her."

Mrs. Angrist is survived by her daughter, son-in-law David Balderston and granddaughters Kate, Elizabeth and Anna, all of Simsbury, Conn.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at First Congregational Church of Glen Ellyn, 535 Forest Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Parish Nurse Program at First Congregational Church in Glen Ellyn, CNS Home Care and Hospice or the Glen Ellyn Infant Welfare Society.
