Homeless man held, charged with year-old Elgin burglary

A homeless man has been charged with a year-old burglary in Elgin, police said.

Gary R. Roppo, 42, whose last known address was 341 Elder #3, Belvidere, was charged Tuesday with burglarizing the Greater Healthcare Center, 370 Summit St., Elgin, on April 17, 2007, police said.

A metal cabinet containing $1,600 in cash was stolen, police said.

Roppo had once worked for a maintenance company that served the building, police said. He used a set of keys he had kept to enter and burglarize the health-care center, police said.

Roppo was unable to post a bond of $2,500 and was taken to the Kane County jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 8 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
