Briefs: Prison time in drug bust

A 34-year-old Bensonville man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for possessing about six ounces of cocaine, Kane County authorities said Tuesday. Manuel Palacios-Jimenez must serve at least half the sentence he received on his Jan. 23 drug conviction, prosecutors said. In early 2007, Palacios-Jimenez was arrested in Elgin during a traffic stop. Elgin police said they found the cocaine and $2,000 cash. At his Thursday sentencing before Judge Patricia Piper Golden, he also was ordered to pay more than $20,000 in fines and costs. Palacios-Jimenez will receive credit for 438 days in the county jail.

Shred papers Saturday

East Dundee will host a shredding event 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Third Street and Railroad, next to the fire station. The event is free for East Dundee residents and $1 for nonresidents. Village staff will be on hand to help destroy confidential documents such as credit card applications, which are often targets for identity thieves. Material must be in a cardboard box or plastic grocery bag. Staples and paper clips can be left in, but items larger than a paper clip must be removed. Household garbage, electronics or computer equipment, yard waste and construction debris is not permitted.

Dist. 158 helps with officer

The village of Huntley and Huntley Unit District 158 have agreed to each pay half the cost of a Huntley police liaison at Huntley High School. District 158 administrators have credited the officer with improving student safety at the high school. In 2003, the district paid 75 percent of the cost of the officer, but the village started paying the full amount in the 2004-2005 school year because of the district's financial difficulties.
