Briefs: Lice detected at Patterson

Head lice have been detected in one third-grade and one fourth-grade classroom at Patterson Elementary School, 3731 Lawrence Drive, Naperville. Principal Quynh Nguyen sent a note home to parents Tuesday encouraging them to carefully check their children's heads for nits.

Waste facility needs funds

The city of Naperville is continuing to seek funding partners for the regional household hazardous waste facility that operates at Fire Station No. 4 at 1979 Brookdale Road. The drop-off facility provides a safe place for disposal of household hazardous waste items, defined as those materials purchased for cleaning or maintaining a home. The facility is facing a $25,000 shortfall in operating costs. At the Cool Ride-Clean Choice hybrid event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday Partners for Clean Choice Inc., will donate 50 percent of the proceeds to help fund the household hazardous waste facility. The event takes place at Naper Settlement, 523 S. Webster St.

Prison time in drug bust

A 34-year-old Bensenville man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for possessing about 6 ounces of cocaine, Kane County authorities said Tuesday. Manuel Palacios-Jimenez must serve at least half the sentence he received on his Jan. 23 drug conviction, prosecutors said. In early 2007, Palacios-Jimenez was arrested in Elgin during a traffic stop. Elgin police said they found the cocaine and $2,000 cash. At his Thursday sentencing before Judge Patricia Piper Golden, he also was ordered to pay more than $20,000 in fines and costs. Palacios-Jimenez will receive credit for 438 days in the county jail.

Used-book sale in Itasca

Itasca Community Library is sponsoring a used-book sale in honor of celebrating National Library Week. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, residents can visit the library during regular hours where they'll find a bag of books for $5. Admission for nonresidents is $5.
