Testimony: Rezko attended fundraiser for President Bush
Tony Rezko was well-known in Chicago Democratic circles for years, but it was clear from testimony Monday that his money was not restricted by political ideology.
In the summer of 2003 -- while advising Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich, whom he helped elect -- Rezko attended a Chicago-area luncheon fundraiser for President George W. Bush, according to testimony from federal witness Steven Loren.
Loren said he attended the Chicago fundraiser on the dime of Stuart Levine, a friend and board member at the Teachers Retirement System, who bought a table at the event. Loren said he saw Rezko there, but he wasn't sitting at his own table.
Rezko's corruption trial has gained national attention because he was also a fundraiser and friend of Barack Obama. He helped him with the purchase of his Hyde Park home.
After Obama's relationship with Rezko gained traction in the current presidential campaign, a fundraiser photo of Bill and Hillary Clinton with Rezko surfaced that appeared to be from the 1990s.
