Military charity needs helpers

Fox Valley Troop Support Inc., a nonprofit agency that aids military personnel, is looking for volunteers to put together spring care packages for local troops stationed overseas.

The organization has scheduled packing sessions from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 5 to 8 p.m. April 29 at the Batavia Veterans of Foreign Wars hall, 645 S. River St. Anyone can attend.

Agency co-chair Sarah Giachino of St. Charles said helpers will receive mailing boxes to fill with toiletries, gifts and other items, which will be sent out with letters from students at the Glenwood School for Boys and Girls.

Late last year, the group, which formed in 2007, sent out more than 200 holiday care packages, Giachino said.

"It's just the spirit of giving and knowing you made a difference in someone's day," she said. "To me, that's the joy in this."

Donations of baby wipes, toothbrushes, sandwich bags and other items also can be dropped off from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the VFW.

Fox Valley Troop Support serves mostly military personnel from the Tri-Cities as well as some from Elgin and Aurora.
