Fire damages Naperville home

No one was injured in a fire late Saturday that caused more than $20,000 in damages to a Naperville home.

Firefighters found smoke and flames rising from the exterior of the chimney chase and eaves of the roof at 6:19 p.m., reports said, after receiving a 911 call four minutes earlier from someone inside the home at 1215 Gateshead Drive.

Everyone inside exited safely before rescue workers arrived, according to reports from the Naperville Fire Department.

Thirteen Naperville fire units, with a total of 29 firefighters, extinguished the blaze in about 15 minutes, although workers stayed on the scene for another hour for additional inspections.

Chief Michael Zywanski said a faulty fireplace caused the blaze.

"Something in the fireplace failed, most likely in the chimney," he said. "It's a metal fireplace and the heat should not get out, yet it got into the wood structure around the metal chimney."

The family can remain in their home while repairs are made, since a building inspector from the Naperville Department of Transportation, Engineering and Development deemed the house habitable.
