Indians' offense remains offensive

The Cleveland Indians stayed in their hitting slump, and Nick Blackburn had plenty to do with keeping them there.

Justin Morneau hit a 2-run homer for the power-poor Minnesota Twins, and Blackburn made it stand up with 7¿ scoreless innings in a 3-0 victory over the Indians on Saturday in Minneapolis.

"I felt we put up some good at-bats, the type of at-bats where you wouldn't expect a zero to be up there," said Cleveland manager Eric Wedge, whose team fell to 7-11. "But that's the way it played out."

Blackburn (1-1), who hit one batter and gave up 8 hits without a walk, earned his first major-league win with veteran poise by using the defense behind him to escape a couple of jams.

Cleveland, the defending AL Central champions, has a league-low .239 average, and designated hitter Travis Hafner -- despite 12 RBI -- dropped to .227 with an 0-for-4 afternoon that included a double play and a strikeout.

Red Sox 5, Rangers 3: Manny Ramirez hit a 2-run homer after slumping slugging partner David Ortiz tied it with an RBI single in the eighth inning, lifting host Boston to a win over Texas.

Angels 4, Mariners 1: Ervin Santana allowed 3 hits over 8 innings and retired 20 of his first 21 batters, leading Los Angeles past visiting Seattle.

Santana (3-0) struck out eight and walked none, improving his all-time home record to 26-9.

Blue Jays 3, Tigers 2: Alex Rios homered, Dustin McGowan won for the first time this season and host Toronto beat Detroit, snapping a six-game home losing streak. Toronto's previous home win was April 6, in the wrapup of a three-game sweep of Boston.

Orioles 6, Yankees 0: Brian Burres and Jim Johnson combined on a 6-hitter and host Baltimore handed New York its third straight loss.

Athletics 6, Royals 5: Kurt Suzuki singled home Chris Denorfia with the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and host Oakland knocked around Kansas City's bullpen for a second straight day.
