No bids for 'Spindle'

An effort to sell a 50-foot stack of rusty automobiles online has failed, putting the future of the structure in doubt. Bidding for the iconic "Spindle" sculpture, which is eight cars stacked on a metal spike and planted in a Berwyn shopping center parking lot, ended Thursday without a bid on the artwork. The sculpture was to be removed last year to make way for a new Walgreens. Michael Flight, president of Concordia Realty, which manages Cermak Plaza, says the estimated $350,000 cost of refurbishing the sculpture is just too much. He posted it for sale on eBay last week with a minimum bid of $50,000. Flight says the shopping center's owners were ready to be rid of the sculpture, which was featured in the movie "Wayne's World."
