Gurnee store to host outdoorsman contest

Gurnee's Bass Pro Shops will be the place for outdoorsmen who want to put their skills up against others.

The Gurnee Mills store will be the site for the Field & Stream Total Outdoorsman Challenge qualifier. It is part of a nationwide competition. The national champion will get $25,000 in cash and prizes.

Last year, 26 outdoors enthusiasts participated in the event in Gurnee, said Tisma Juett, marketing promotions manager for Bass Pro. She hopes that number grows for the free event set for May 2-4. Events will run 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration each day is 10 a.m.

"Our goal is to hopefully get 50 competitors per day," Juett said.

Competitors will be scored in bait casting, archery and air rifle. The top six in each Bass Pro store advance to the regional event in Independence, Mo.

Those who make it out of the regional will be in the national championship in Springfield, Mo. Seven outdoor skill challenges will determine the winner.
