Burlington Central 1, Hampshire 0

Hampshire may have dominated the time of possession, but Burlington Central dominated in the only statistic that counts.

Karly Kuranda's goal late in the first half was the only score of the game as the Rockets downed Hampshire in Big Northern East action on Rocket Hill.

The Rockets won their third straight to move to 4-6, 2-0 in the BN-East.

The game shaped up as a tight, physical defensive struggle, with neither team getting many scoring opportunities. But with just over 3 minutes left before intermission, Kuranda found herself with an opening and took advantage. She took a feed from Kelly Engelking on her left foot and connected on a low shot from about 15 yards out.

"It was on my left foot and I wasn't going to trade it," said Kuranda. "Might as well hit it, it was wide open."

Until then, most of the scoring opportunities belonged to Hampshire, which fell to 5-2-1, 2-1.

Christine Schumacher had a wide open shot but missed just high. She missed wide to the left later in the half. Earlier, Rocket goalkeeper Kim DeRaedt stopped Kelsey Burke from close range.

"They're a quality team and they kept with us," said Burlington Central coach Mike Gecan of the Whip-Purs. "They just couldn't get their shots. We didn't get many shots either.

We made the one count that we needed."

The teams combined for just one shot on goal after intermission. Central's defense, led by Cara Martini, kept the Whip-Purs at bay.

"It's disappointing for the girls," said Hampshire coach Patrick O'Brien. "We haven't dominated a game this thoroughly for a long time.

The amount of possession we had in their half was incredible tonight, but we just weren't getting enough combinations up front. "I've never been more proud of a team that lost a game than I am tonight."

Batavia 1, Sycamore 0: Mary Wandolowski tallied the game's only goal in the second half.

St. Charles East 3, Lyons 0: Ellen Bartindale scored twice and had an assist in the nonconference outing on the road.

Caren Bieschke also scored for the Saints, who are 5-2 overall.
