Pair believed to be responsible for two dozen car burglaries in Elgin
Elgin police this morning arrested two Elgin teenagers who they say admitted to burglarizing two dozen vehicles in the city.
DeMarquis S. Smith, 17, of 352 Billings St., Elgin, was charged in court Tuesday with four felonies, including two counts of burglary, possession of burglary tools and criminal damage to property, according to a report.
The 15-year-old was turned over to juvenile authorities, police said.
Police say they found the two teens at 2:45 a.m. today on the 300 block of Lake Street near a black Lexus that had paint scratches and pry marks on its rear and front passenger-side doors. Burglary tools, cell phones and miscellaneous change was found on the ground where they had been standing, a report said.
Police drove Smith around Elgin Tuesday morning, and he pointed out to them places where he remembered burglarizing vehicles, a report said.
Smith was charged in only three of the burglaries so far; police expect more charges to be filed after they do more investigation.
Smith was taken to the Kane County jail Tuesday afternoon with a $7,500 bond.
