Metra, Glen Ellyn to fix wall
Metra and Glen Ellyn will join forces to improve a brick retaining wall near the village's downtown train station.
Both entered into an intergovernmental agreement this week. As part of that agreement, Metra next month will replace and repair the brick wall located north of the train station.
"It's in a state of disrepair and has deteriorated to a point where we think it's a safety hazard," Planning and Development Director Staci Hulseberg said.
The total cost of the project is about $120,000. After Metra finishes the work, Glen Ellyn will maintain the new wall.
"Metra has agreed to repair and rebuild portions of the wall, as long as the village funds the maintenance," Hulseberg said.
Once the work begins, a portion of the public sidewalk will be closed off. A few street parking spaces also will be unavailable during the project.
Construction will be done between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to avoid the morning and evening rush hours.
Hulseberg said the village has been trying to convince Metra to repair the retaining wall for about two years.
"I'm thrilled that they're willing to move forward with this," she said.
