Major-league roundup
Six months later, the Red Sox came back on the Indians again.
Manny Ramirez hit a 2-run homer -- No. 493 of his career -- and Boston rallied for 3 runs in the ninth inning against closer Joe Borowski for a 6-4 win Monday night over host Cleveland in a stunning rerun of last October's AL championship series.
Ramirez's shot to left off Borowski was just the latest Red Sox comeback against the Indians. Last fall, Boston rallied from a 3-1 ALCS deficit to advance to the World Series. The stakes weren't nearly as high this time, but the Red Sox came through again.
Julio Lugo hit a leadoff double in the ninth off Borowski, snapping an 0-for-16 slump, and scored on Dustin Pedroia's sacrifice fly to tie it 4-4.
With the Indians shifted to the right, David Ortiz dropped a bloop single into left -- his second hit. Ramirez then belted Borowski's first pitch into the left-field seats, a place he frequently visited with long balls while a member of the Indians.
The homer tied Ramirez with Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff for 24th on the career list.
Mike Timlin (1-1) pitched a perfect eighth, and Jonathan Papelbon worked the ninth for his fifth save.
Yankees 8, Rays 7: Robinson Cano's pinch homer snapped an eighth-inning tie, and Alex Rodriguez hit No. 521 to match Hall of Famers Ted Williams and Willie McCovey for 15th on the career list in New York's victory at Tampa Bay.
With shortstop Derek Jeter back in the lineup, Yankees starter Ian Kennedy cruised into the seventh inning with a 7-2 lead before he was hit on the right hip by Jason Bartlett's line drive, knocking him out of the game.
The Rays quickly rallied. Carl Crawford hit a 2-run homer off Billy Traber. B.J. Upton added a two-run drive off winner Brian Bruney, then rookie Evan Longoria connected against Bruney (1-0) for his first major-league home run to tie it at 7-7.
But Cano, who entered hitting .170 and was rested by manager Joe Girardi, came off the bench to put the Yankees back in front with a long homer to right off Al Reyes (1-2).
Mariano Rivera got four outs for his fourth save.
Tigers 11, Twins 9: Ivan Rodriguez tied it with a 2-run triple in 6-run eighth inning, then scored the go-ahead run on Jacque Jones' sacrifice fly to lift struggling Detroit past visiting Minnesota.
Rodriguez also homered in the seventh, and the Tigers won for the first time in seven home games. They improved to 3-10 overall, still the worst record in baseball.
Orioles 4, Blue Jays 3: Kevin Millar homered and drove in three runs to back a fine pitching performance by Matt Albers in host Baltimore's victory over Toronto.
Adam Jones tied a career high with 3 hits for the Orioles, who won their sixth straight home game and broke a first-place tie with the Blue Jays in the AL East.
Obtained in the offseason trade that sent Miguel Tejada to Houston, Albers (2-0) allowed 1 run, 5 hits and a walk in 5 innings to earn his first AL win.
Angels 7, Rangers 4: Ervin Santana rebounded from a 3-run first to pitch 7 strong innings, and Mike Napoli homered as visiting Los Angeles handed Texas its fourth straight loss.
Santana (2-0) came in 1-4 with an 8.92 ERA against the Rangers on the road and quickly fell behind, allowing Hank Blalock's 2-run homer and Michael Young's sacrifice fly in the first. But after loading the bases in the third, he retired 11 straight.
Francisco Rodriguez pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.
The Angels went in front 5-3 in the second against Jason Jennings (0-3) on Napoli's leadoff homer, Vladimir Guerrero's run-scoring double and Garret Anderson's RBI single.
