Alexander leaves Illini basketball program

CHAMPAIGN - Illinois head coach Bruce Weber announced today that junior Rodney Alexander is no longer a member of the Illinois basketball team.

Alexander, a 6-7 forward from Benton Harbor, Mich., spent two years at Redlands (Okla.) Community College prior to arriving on the UI campus. He played in 31 games last season for the Illini, starting 15 times, and averaged 4.6 points and 2.9 rebounds. He recorded career highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds at Ohio State on Jan. 22.

"In our individual meetings at the conclusion of the season, Rodney indicated that he was unsure about his future at Illinois," Weber said. "After taking some time and discussing his situation further, we have mutually agreed that it is in his best interest to pursue an opportunity at another institution. We thank him for his effort here and wish him the best."
