Scouts take pride in Pinewood Derby races

On March 9, Liberty Elementary School's Cub Scout Pack 154 turned the gym at St. Catherine of Siena Church in West Dundee into a race track, where they continued the time-honored tradition of the Pinewood Derby.

Leader Ann Wenzel, whose husband Jim is Cub Master, said the boys had been working on their cars since before Christmas.

First-grade Tigers started the event, followed by second-grade Wolves, third-grade Bears, and fourth-grade Webelos.

Trophies were given for first-place and second-place prizes for the winners from the Carpentersville-based Cub Scout Pack.

The top boys from every level raced against each other for the overall fastest car of the pack.

There also was an award for Most Unique Design, which was voted on by the boys.
