From the Armed Forces

• Army Major Robert J. Leahy, Jr., brother of Colette Ritter of Algonquin, has arrived for duty at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas. Leahy has 32 years of military service and has been extended for an additional year.

The major is a 1975 graduate of William Fremd High School in Palatine, and received a bachelor's degree in 1992 from Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago. He earned a master's degree in 2005 from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb.

• Air Force Airman 1st Class Carter L. Mitol, son of Tom and Karen A. Zimmerman of Deer Park, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches; and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Mitol graduated in 2005 from Wheeling High School, and received an associate degree in 2007 from Harper College, Palatine.
