For sale: 'Car Kabob' landmark

A towering sculpture of eight cars made famous in the movie "Wayne's World" has been listed for sale on eBay.

The Berwyn landmark is named the Spindle and features cars from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s skewered on a metal spike.

Bids open at $50,000, and the auction closes on Thursday. The eBay listing said it will cost $100,000 to ship the 50-foot structure.

The Spindle -- also known as the "Car Kabob" and the "Eight Car Pileup" -- has drawn fans of the 1992 comedy starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey.

Berwyn residents have been divided on what to do with the structure, which is covered with layers of rust and pigeon droppings. It was supposed to be dismantled last year to make way for a pharmacy, but preservation groups formed and protested.

California artist Dustin Shuler built the piece in 1989. It has stood near a Berwyn shopping plaza since then.

Officials with the shopping plaza's management company, Concordia Realty, estimate it would take $300,000 to take down the structure and refurbish it.

"If someone wants to buy it and give it a home, we're willing to sell it to them," said Michael Flight of Concordia Realty. "Otherwise, we're planning on probably taking it down sometime this year."

The eBay listing boasts that the Spindle is an internationally "known roadside monument" and "was even was featured in a State of Illinois tourism campaign."
